COMMON QUESTIONS

The Answers You Need

IS IT LEGAL?

Home education is legal here in the UK. It is the parent's responsibility to ensure the child of compulsory school age receives a complete and suitable education for their age, stage of development and special educational needs. It is legal in many other countries so check the national guidance where you live.

DO WE HAVE TO FOLLOW A CURRICULUM?

No, you don't have to follow any set curriculum, although you can if you want to. The best thing about home education is that you can tailor the education to your child and family's needs, interests and passions. You can buy many pre-planned curriculums for all or individual subjects and many great recourses and tools to compliment your home education journey. You have the freedom to follow your child's interests and enjoy the journey it takes you on.

IS HOME EDUCATION COSTLY?

You don't need to have lots of expensive equipment and recourses. Borrowing books from the library, buying second hand books and equipment (charity shops and car-boot sales are a brilliant place to pick up bits), documentaries, films and TV shows cover all topics and great to enjoy as a family, sharing resources with friends and trading skills are all good ways of keeping the cost down. Getting out in nature to meet friends, study nature, experience the seasons, run, climb and explore. Involve the kids in everyday tasks for real life learning opportunities. Make contact with your local home education group on social media where you will find plenty of low cost or free meet ups and field trips you can access.

HOW WILL THE CHILDREN SOCIALISE?

This is the number one question we get. When home educating, there are loads of opportunities to spend time with other  children learning and playing, whether it be through workshops, planned activities, online classes and games, regular meet ups anywhere and everywhere and spontaneous meetings at the park or beach. Children play, learn  and build friendships with other children and adults of all ages.  As a parent we get to meet lots of other parents and make long lasting friendships through the home educating community which can be such a support along this path.

DO I NEED TO BE A QUALIFIED TEACHER?

No you don't need to be a qualified teacher. You are the first and most important educator for your child, you know your child best. You've been doing it since birth; you're watching carefully, following their lead, creating a safe and caring environment for your child to thrive, opportunities for curiosity, listening to them, chatting with them, encouraging them. Just keep going!

"Children learn from anything and everything they see. They learn wherever they are, not just in special learning places."
